Newfound Gap is a mountain pass near the centre of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, with elevation figures cited at 5,046 or 5,048 feet depending on the source. The Tennessee-North Carolina state line runs across it, and so does the Appalachian Trail, so it is the one place on the drive where you can stand in two states and on the famous footpath at once.
The Rockefeller Memorial stands at the pass. The park itself was chartered by Congress in 1934 and dedicated by President Franklin Roosevelt in 1940.
The pass is reached on Newfound Gap Road, the main route across the park between Gatlinburg and Cherokee, which is why a short Jeep tour can reach it from the Pigeon Forge area and still leave time at the overlook.
