Great Smoky Mountains National Park covers about 522,000 acres and is the most visited national park in the United States. It was chartered in 1934 and dedicated in 1940, and the two towns at its Tennessee edge, Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, grew up around it.
A two-hour loop cannot cover the park, so this tour is best understood as an orientation. It links the park's edge to the surrounding mountain-resort towns and gives a visitor a feel for the ridges and valleys before a longer day.
