Nevada San Martín is a private nature reserve on the edge of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta National Park, reached by about a 45-minute drive up the San Lorenzo ridge on a paved road. That ridge is part of what makes the Sierra Nevada famous: the range rises only about 42 km from the Caribbean and is often called the highest coastal mountain range in the world.
The range was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1979 and holds almost every climate zone, from hot lowlands to permanent snow, with rivers fanning out from it. The Kogi, Arhuaco, Wiwa and Kankuamo peoples live on its slopes, and the higher peaks are sacred to them and closed to ordinary visitors.
Because it is a private reserve, the day is about unhurried walks and viewpoints rather than a crowded circuit; cloud often builds by afternoon, so mornings offer the clearest views.
