Pisa's Leaning Tower has been tilting almost since the day it was built. Construction began in 1174 as a freestanding bell tower for the cathedral, but the soft, sandy subsoil beneath the city — a mix of clay and river deposits from the Arno and Serchio — started giving way as soon as the third story went up. Wars with Florence and other interruptions stretched the build out for nearly two centuries; it wasn't finished until 1360.
By 1990 the tower's lean had reached a striking 10 degrees before a major stabilization project brought it back to a safer, still-visible tilt — which is roughly how you'll see it today. The ground on the drive there covers plenty of history of its own, including Siena's shell-shaped Piazza del Campo and San Gimignano's famous medieval skyline, where 72 stone towers once competed for height in the 13th century and 14 still stand.
Covering Siena, San Gimignano, Chianti wine country, and Pisa in a single day is genuinely full — the trade-off for seeing all four is less lingering time in each, which a private driver can at least help you use efficiently rather than losing time to a group's pace.
