Sian Ka'an's real bird checklist is substantial — UNESCO's own records put the reserve-wide count at roughly 330 recorded species, with upward of 350 resident and migratory species noted by other published counts, a diversity that comes from the reserve stitching together tropical forest, mangrove, freshwater and brackish marsh, and a barrier-reef coastline into one continuous habitat corridor. A single day's outing naturally won't turn up the full reserve list, but a well-timed visit to the right mix of habitats around Muyil can realistically put dozens of real species in view.
The ruins at Muyil (also called Chunyaxché) sit directly on this wetland system, overlooking the Sian Ka'an lagoon itself — the Maya who settled here from as early as 350 BC chose the site in part for the same reason birds concentrate here today: it sits where freshwater wetland, lagoon, and forest all meet, a transition zone that tends to be among the richest kind of habitat for wildlife.
Because the focus here is wildlife rather than ruins, the pace and route genuinely differ from a standard Sian Ka'an sightseeing day — more time spent quietly scanning the mangrove edges and wetland margins where species like herons, egrets, jacanas, and a range of migratory songbirds tend to concentrate, with the Maya history of the area explained along the way rather than being the day's main event.
