President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed the General Grant Tree the Nation's Christmas Tree on April 28, 1926, and in 1956 President Eisenhower designated it a National Shrine, a memorial to Americans who died in war. It is generally described as the only living object with that designation. Estimates of its age range widely, commonly from about 2,000 to 3,000 years, and it stands roughly 267 feet tall.
Winter changes the setting completely. The tree is reached from Grant Grove via Grant Tree Road, and the park's road conditions vary with storms: chains or cables may be required, and the Big Stump entrance on Highway 180 can be icy. Access to the colder high country is not guaranteed on any given day, which is why this tour runs season and snow permitting.
A quiet grove under snow is one of the better arguments for visiting in the cold months: far fewer people, softened sound, and the dark red bark of the giant sequoia against white. Dress in layers and expect conditions to decide the exact route.
