Three Rivers is the small foothill town along the Kaweah River that works as the gateway to Sequoia. Its name comes from the river's three branches, and it sits at the beginning of the road up to the groves, so it is a natural starting point for a day in the park.
The Giant Forest region holds the General Sherman Tree, about 275 feet tall and roughly 52,500 cubic feet by volume, generally estimated at 2,500 to 3,000 years old. The Generals Highway climbs about 32 miles from the foothills at around 1,500 feet to the sequoias near 6,400 feet.
A picnic lunch eaten among giant sequoias is a good way to slow the day down. Mid-elevation forest air can be noticeably cooler than the foothills, so bring a layer.
