Snowshoeing is a long-standing way to see the Giant Forest in winter, when snow can close the high roads to ordinary traffic. The Generals Highway above the foothills is subject to chain controls and, after big storms, can be shut or reduced to one lane, so seasonal access depends on conditions rather than the calendar.
Bear Hill is a modest rise near the Giant Forest, and the 2.5-mile round trip in this tour is a moderate, accessible introduction to winter travel in the sequoia groves. Sequoia bark is thick and fire-resistant, and the trunks stand out starkly against snow, while the forest is noticeably quiet and animal tracks are easy to read.
Because the season depends on snowpack, the roughly December to April window is a guide, not a promise. Equipment is provided, so you need only warm, waterproof layers.
