Two days changes the pace. Instead of racing between the parks, you can take in Sequoia's Giant Forest, where the General Sherman Tree stands about 275 feet tall, and still have time for Kings Canyon, where the General Grant Tree and, farther afield, the scenic byway into the canyon reward the extra day.
The two parks have been jointly administered since 1943, but their characters differ. Sequoia is known for the Giant Forest and its granite landmarks, and Kings Canyon is more wilderness, much of it reachable only on foot.
Overnighting also means a second chance at the light: the sequoias look different at dawn and dusk, and the park's skies are among California's darkest.
