Fresno is the closest large city to the northern entrance, and the drive from Fresno to Kings Canyon's Big Stump entrance on CA-180 takes roughly an hour and a quarter, so a one-day loop covering both parks is genuinely practical from there.
Redwood Mountain Grove, seen on this tour from an overlook, is generally described as the largest giant sequoia grove on Earth by total area, with more mature sequoias than any other grove. It lies in Kings Canyon National Park and the surrounding national monument.
Between General Grant, General Sherman, Tunnel Log (cut in 1937) and Moro Rock (stairway built 1931), the day spans both parks. The Generals Highway between them is a mountain road, so allow more time than the map suggests.
