From Los Angeles the parks are roughly 200 to 225 miles away, about four to five hours' driving each way, so splitting the visit over two days avoids a single exhausting day on the road.
Sequoia National Park was established September 25, 1890, as America's second national park, and General Grant National Park followed on October 1, 1890. Kings Canyon absorbed General Grant in 1940. The Generals Highway from the Ash Mountain entrance climbs roughly 32 miles through changing forest to the giant sequoia groves.
That two-day span lets you spend time at both the General Sherman and General Grant Trees, the two largest by volume in the world, and see Moro Rock's 350-step stairway built in 1931.
