The two parks that share this tour's name were created in stages. Sequoia became America's second-oldest national park on September 25, 1890, and General Grant National Park followed a week later on October 1, 1890, both to protect the giant sequoias. In 1940 General Grant was folded into the newly created Kings Canyon National Park, and the two have been run jointly since 1943.
That history is why you get a choice of region here. The Giant Forest in Sequoia is the famous high-elevation grove, home to the General Sherman Tree, and the Generals Highway climbs to it from the foothills, roughly 32 miles from the Ash Mountain entrance (about 1,500 feet) up to around 6,400 feet. Grant Grove in Kings Canyon is smaller and more compact, and its centerpiece is the General Grant Tree.
Choosing the grove you want, rather than following a fixed route, is the real value of a flexible private format. Both groves sit among the same Sierra Nevada forest of giant sequoia, but they feel different on the ground, and your guide can fit pacing and trail length to your group.
