Reaching both parks in a day from Los Angeles means a long drive. Sequoia is roughly 200 to 225 miles from the city, around four to five hours, so the General Grant Tree in Kings Canyon is a deliberate extra stop.
The General Grant Tree was proclaimed the Nation's Christmas Tree on April 28, 1926, and designated a National Shrine in 1956. It is usually described as the second-largest tree by volume, behind General Sherman. The two parks were separate until 1940, when General Grant National Park became part of Kings Canyon.
The sunset stop at Moro Rock adds another dimension: the stairway built in 1931 climbs 350 steps to a granite summit at 6,725 feet. Tunnel Log, cut through a fallen sequoia in 1937, is a good photo stop. Expect a very full day.
