Crystal Cave is a marble cave within Sequoia, discovered April 28, 1918, by Alex Medley and Cassius Webster. It is one of at least 240 known caves in the park and the only one open to the public, and visitors can enter only on guided tours run by the Sequoia Parks Conservancy.
The cave stays at a constant temperature around 48 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit, so a jacket is needed even on hot days. Tours generally run from around Memorial Day to mid-October, weather permitting, and tickets are limited. Access is via a roughly seven-mile winding road off the Generals Highway, and construction can add delay in some seasons, so check current status.
Sequoia is a long reach from San Francisco, so this is a very full day. The General Sherman Tree, about 275 feet tall, is the other anchor.
