Tulare and Visalia sit in the San Joaquin Valley, and the road to Sequoia climbs from there through the foothills via Three Rivers, a small town built along the branches of the Kaweah River. The Generals Highway then rises about 32 miles inside the park from the Ash Mountain entrance, around 1,500 feet, to the sequoia groves near 6,400 feet.
That climb is much of the experience: oak woodland and chaparral give way to conifer forest, and temperatures drop noticeably. A private vehicle means you can stop at vista points on the way rather than rushing to the groves.
The customizable stops in this itinerary cover the three classic hikes. Moro Rock's 350-step staircase was built in 1931, and a meadow walk and a giant-sequoia grove walk round out a day that can be tuned to the group's fitness.
