The idea of Sedona vortexes is recent. The term is credited to Page Bryant, a Sedona psychic who in 1980 said she channeled information naming several energy centers, among them Boynton Canyon, Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock and Airport Mesa. The belief spread widely after the 1987 Harmonic Convergence, when more than ten thousand people gathered in Sedona.
That makes vortex practice a popular local tradition of the last few decades, not something with scientific backing, and not an ancient Native American custom. Many visitors still find the places, with their wide views and quiet, genuinely moving.
The jeep portion takes you on forest backcountry roads, and the hike finishes at a site with views in every direction, away from the busier trailheads.
