Arizona wine country is young. Verde Valley was established as an American Viticultural Area on November 9, 2021, Arizona's third and the 260th in the United States, with roughly a dozen wineries and two dozen tasting rooms.
At around 3,300 feet or more, elevation keeps nights cooler than the desert floor suggests. The valley's growers have worked with Rhône and Italian varieties, and the region's story starts only in the early 2000s.
Jerome, the optional add-on, is a hillside mining town that peaked near 15,000 people around 1929 and fell to about a hundred by the 1950s, so the contrast between its history and the newer vineyards is part of the day.
