The Chapel of the Holy Cross, built into the buttes between 1954 and 1956, is the one stop on this loop with a story that starts far from Arizona. Marguerite Brunswig Staude, a student of Frank Lloyd Wright, was inspired in 1932 by the Empire State Building to imagine a skyscraper-style church, and sketched the idea with Lloyd Wright, Frank's son. The chapel that was actually built was designed by August K. Strotz of the firm Anshen & Allen, with Richard Hein as project architect, and it won an American Institute of Architects Award of Honor in 1957.
The red color you see all morning is iron oxide, hematite, staining the sandstone of the Schnebly Hill Formation and the older Hermit Formation beneath it. Cathedral Rock, whose summit stands at about 4,967 feet, is carved from the Schnebly Hill sandstone, red beds that began as coastal dunes along the shore of an ancient sea in the Permian.
Oak Creek Canyon, the other end of the loop, runs about 12 miles between Sedona and Flagstaff, and State Route 89A threads along its floor. With the pace set by your group, you can linger at a viewpoint when the light turns rather than keep to a fixed timetable.
