The word vortex, as Sedona uses it, goes back to 1980, when Page Bryant, a local psychic, said she channeled information from a spirit guide naming several energy centers. She named four as the most significant: Boynton Canyon, Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock and Airport Saddle.
The belief spread widely after August 1987, when the Harmonic Convergence drew more than ten thousand people to Sedona. It is a modern tradition, not a proven physical phenomenon, and nobody needs to believe in it to enjoy a quiet setting.
Cathedral Rock, one of the named sites, is carved from the Permian Schnebly Hill Formation, so even a skeptic gets a real geology lesson alongside the meditation.
