The petrified wood at Petrified Forest National Park is roughly 225 million years old: trees swept into ancient rivers were buried by volcanic ash, and minerals replaced the wood. The logs lie in the colorful Chinle Formation, the same layers that give the Painted Desert its name.
The area was designated a national monument by Theodore Roosevelt in 1908 and became a national park in 1962, when a larger area was added.
Along the way, Walnut Canyon holds Sinagua cliff dwellings built roughly 1125 to 1250 under limestone ledges; the Island Trail is a loop of under a mile, and the canyon became a national monument in 1915. Holbrook, the lunch stop, is on the old Route 66 corridor.
