Dry Creek Basin is the wide valley west of Sedona's best-known formations, ringed by the Red Rock Range. It has long been working ranch and film country: Sedona hosted more than 60 productions between 1923 and 1973, including Broken Arrow (1950), a Western that was one of the first major films of its kind to portray Native Americans sympathetically.
Johnny Guitar, with Joan Crawford, began shooting here in October 1953 in the shadow of Coffee Pot Rock, then part of an area called Grasshopper Flats. Street names in West Sedona, such as Johnny Guitar Road, still carry that history.
The red color underfoot comes from hematite staining the sandstone, and the 4x4 trail drops you to the basin floor, where the buttes rise above you rather than sitting at eye level as they do from the highway.
