Diamondback Gulch is a rugged drainage southwest of Sedona, and the trail here is rated Extreme for jeeps, which is why the vehicle matters more on this tour than on most. Large parts of the route cannot be driven in an ordinary vehicle.
On the horizon, Mingus Mountain rises to about 7,815 feet in the Black Hills, above the Verde Valley. Its summit is guarded by dark basalt ledges, a different story from the red sandstone around Sedona. Below it, the town of Jerome sits on the mountain's slope; its United Verde copper mine produced well over a billion dollars of metals in total.
Sedona's Westerns history is also part of the route's appeal: more than 60 productions were filmed in the region between 1923 and 1973, so some of the open desert you cross will look familiar from old films, though your guide can say which spots are tied to which productions.
