A full day leaves room for choices that a half-day cannot. Jerome, the optional stop, sits on Mingus Mountain's slope. William A. Clark bought control of the claim in 1889 and formed the United Verde Copper Company; the town peaked near 15,000 people around 1929, then declined after Phelps Dodge closed its operations in 1952, leaving roughly a hundred residents. Today it is often called the largest ghost town in the United States, though a couple of hundred people live there.
Tuzigoot, another option, is a pueblo of about 110 rooms in two and three stories, built by the Sinagua around 1000 CE on a limestone ridge roughly 120 feet above the Verde Valley. It became a national monument in 1939.
The core stops are the Chapel of the Holy Cross, built 1954 to 1956 and designed by August K. Strotz of Anshen & Allen, and Bell Rock, a butte whose summit stands near 4,919 feet.
