Sedona was named the world's eighth International Dark Sky Community by the International Dark-Sky Association, announced on August 4, 2014. The designation reflects local rules: outdoor lighting codes, curfews on city-owned lighting, and no new roadway lighting in city rights-of-way except for safety.
The effort grew out of Keep Sedona Beautiful, founded by residents in 1972 over growth concerns. Its members later took up light pollution as an environmental issue, and the city council made the designation a priority in December 2012.
Sunset first, then stars: red cliffs flush in the last light, and once the sky darkens the contrast with the town's carefully shielded lights makes the night sky easier to see.
