Cathedral Rock reaches about 4,967 feet and is carved from the Permian Schnebly Hill Formation, red sandstone that began as coastal dunes beside an ancient sea. Ripple marks are visible along the lower trail, and a dark basalt dike can be seen near the first saddle, a clue to a more violent chapter in the area's geology.
The main route, Trail #170 from the Back O' Beyond trailhead, is short but steep and climbs to the saddles between the spires. Reaching the saddle and standing at the top of the rock are different things, and your guide can set expectations for your group.
The red color is iron oxide, hematite, which stains the sandstone and the older Hermit Formation beneath it.
