The saguaro cacti silhouetted against the sunset on this ride are far older, and far slower-growing, than most visitors realize. A saguaro often grows less than an inch a year in its early decades, with the exact rate depending heavily on local rainfall, and it typically doesn't start flowering until it's around 35 years old. Most don't grow their first arm until somewhere between 50 and 100 years of age, and plenty never grow one at all. Given a lifespan that can stretch to 150 or even 200 years, the iconic multi-armed saguaro shapes you'll see framed against the colored sky could easily predate the city of Scottsdale itself, which wasn't incorporated until 1951.
Timing a desert ride around dusk isn't just about the colors in the sky. Dawn and dusk are when Sonoran Desert wildlife is most active, as many of the region's mammals are nocturnal or crepuscular by nature. Javelina, which travel in tight family groups and are often spotted moving through washes right around sunset, are a common sight in and around Scottsdale's desert edges, and coyotes are frequently heard, if not always seen, calling to each other as the light fades. Your guide, who spends these trails regularly, can point out tracks, burrows, and plant life along the way that are easy to miss without local knowledge.
This tour runs on the closest real desert trails to Scottsdale and Phoenix rather than requiring a long drive out to more remote terrain, which is part of what makes a tightly timed sunset departure practical in the first place. Because the Sonoran Desert is one of the few deserts in the world where a true forest of saguaro cacti grows, the particular combination of backlit cactus silhouettes against a changing sky is something genuinely specific to this corner of Arizona, not a generic desert sunset you could find anywhere.
