Tybee Island has marked the entrance to the Savannah River for nearly three centuries. General James Oglethorpe, who founded the Georgia colony in 1733, ordered a lighthouse built here in 1736 to guide ships into the river — at 90 feet tall, it was the tallest structure in America at the time. That original lighthouse didn't survive beach erosion, and it's been rebuilt several times since: a second version went up in 1742, and part of a third lighthouse built in 1773 still forms the bottom 60 feet of the lighthouse standing today, with its top 94 feet added in 1867. The Tybee Island Light Station is now one of only a handful of 18th-century lighthouses still operating anywhere in North America — a real, working landmark, not a replica.
The island itself is a genuine barrier island in Chatham County, sitting about 18 miles east of downtown Savannah at the mouth of the Savannah River — the reason Oglethorpe considered it so strategically important to the young colony in the first place. Most historians trace the name "Tybee" to a Euchee word meaning "salt," reflecting the natural salt resources the island's Native American inhabitants relied on long before European settlement.
That history is easy to overlook once you're actually on the sand, but it's part of what makes Tybee more than just a generic beach day — you're on an island that's been a working, strategically important piece of the Georgia coast since the colony's earliest years, with a lighthouse still standing (and still functioning) to prove it.
