Colonial Park Cemetery, typically one of the first stops on a tour like this, is Savannah's oldest — laid out in 1750 and serving as the city's main public burying ground until 1853. It holds roughly 700 victims of the catastrophic 1820 yellow fever epidemic in a single mass grave, along with genuine historical figures including Revolutionary War major general Nathanael Greene, Georgia governors Archibald Bullock and Samuel Elbert, and Button Gwinnett, one of Georgia's signers of the Declaration of Independence. The cemetery's headstones themselves carry a documented wartime indignity: after Savannah fell to Union forces in December 1864, cavalry troops reportedly used the gated grounds as a corral and grazing area for their horses, and local legend holds that some soldiers deliberately switched around headstones as a dark joke on the city they'd just taken.
Bonaventure, usually the most anticipated of the seven, has its own documented history as a former plantation. Landscape designer James H. Rion was hired in 1850 to lay out its winding paths and family plots in the rural-cemetery style beneath oaks that had been planted decades earlier as part of the original Bonaventure Plantation. Its permanent residents include two genuine Savannah-born cultural figures: songwriter Johnny Mercer, who wrote the lyrics to more than 1,500 songs — including "Moon River" and "Autumn Leaves" — won four Academy Awards, and co-founded Capitol Records, and Pulitzer-nominated poet and novelist Conrad Aiken, whose grave includes a bench where visitors still sit.
Savannah's unusually high number of historic cemeteries isn't a coincidence — repeated outbreaks of yellow fever and other epidemics through the 1800s meant the city had to keep opening new burial grounds as older ones filled, a pattern a full day spent moving between several of them makes genuinely visible. Because the exact mix of seven cemeteries on this particular day can vary, your guide confirms the full list with you at booking, but Bonaventure and Colonial Park are its most consistent anchors.
