The river you're cruising has been Savannah's working artery since the city's very founding. General James Oglethorpe chose the site at Yamacraw Bluff on the Savannah River in 1733, establishing it as Georgia's first city and, with it, Georgia's first port. By 1744, colonists had built the first dock for ocean-going ships, and within thirty years more than a dozen warehouses lined the riverfront. Cotton eventually came to dominate: by 1855, exports through Savannah had climbed to $20.1 million, nearly 90 percent of it cotton, and it remained the port's principal export right up through the Civil War. That centuries-long trading history is still visible in the waterfront architecture you pass today.
Skidaway Island State Park, one of the real stops along this route, carries its own layered past. The 588-acre park sits on Skidaway Narrows, part of the Intracoastal Waterway, and its maritime forest is considered among the healthiest and most diverse stands remaining near Savannah. Walking its trails — or, from the water, passing alongside it — traces a timeline that runs from Native American inhabitants through colonial-era cotton and indigo plantations, Civil War-era earthworks manned by the 4th Georgia Battery, a Benedictine monastery and school established near Priest's Landing, and Prohibition-era bootlegging that took advantage of the island's isolation.
The route also passes through what's known today as the Moon River District, a name with a genuinely local story behind it. The district — which stretches along the Moon and Skidaway Rivers and takes in Isle of Hope, Skidaway Island, Ossabaw Island, and Sandfly — is named for the Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer song "Moon River"; Mercer himself was a Savannah native, and a real inlet near his hometown was later named in honor of him and the song. Combined with wildlife like the dolphins and eagles that frequent these waters, it's a route that's genuinely tied to the place, not just a generic boat ride.
