The stroll begins down on Savannah's historic riverfront, where River Street and the parallel Factors Walk run along a bluff above the Savannah River. The redbrick warehouses here are known as Factors Row, named for the "factors" — cotton brokers — who graded and traded cotton inside them during the 19th-century King Cotton era. Architects building on this steep riverbank stacked the warehouses in multiple tiers and built them from ballast stone, carried over as dead weight in the holds of sailing ships and then repurposed once the ships loaded up with cotton for the return voyage. Several cast-iron pedestrian bridges still span Factors Walk, connecting the upper street level to the buildings below, and in spring they're often draped in blooming jasmine.
From the river, the route winds up into Savannah's famous square system, laid out under General James Oglethorpe's original 1733 town plan. Johnson Square, the first square Oglethorpe platted, is still the largest of the city's squares today; the city ultimately grew to two dozen of these small, oak-shaded parks, each built around its own fountain, monument, or garden. Live oaks draped in Spanish moss form a natural canopy over the walkways and benches, turning the squares into quiet, shaded rooms within the city rather than open plazas — part of why Savannah's historic district reads as one of the best-preserved 18th- and 19th-century urban plans in the country.
Because this is a private tour built for two, the pace is set entirely by you rather than by a group's schedule — time to actually sit on a bench under the oaks, linger at a fountain, or detour down a side street that catches your eye, rather than moving on a fixed itinerary timed for a dozen other people.
