Of all the films shot in Savannah, none is more closely tied to the city than Forrest Gump. The production arrived in the fall of 1993, and the movie's opening and closing "park bench" scenes — Forrest recounting his life story to strangers at a bus stop — were filmed on the north side of Chippewa Square, one of Savannah's historic squares, originally laid out in 1815. The bench itself wasn't a real park fixture; it was a fiberglass prop built for the film, and one of the two original prop benches used on set is now on display at the Savannah History Museum, just a few blocks away. That single scene has done more than almost anything else to put Savannah on the map for film tourists, and it's the anchor of this half-day route.
The tour is built as a shorter, lighter-paced alternative to Voyzo's full-day Savannah film locations tour, designed for travelers who want to see the city's most iconic on-screen moment and a focused handful of other real filming spots without committing a whole day to it. Georgia's film industry has grown enormously since Forrest Gump was shot here in 1993 — a 2008 state tax credit of up to 30% on qualifying production spending, with Savannah adding its own local rebate, has helped turn the city into one of the country's most recognized small-city filming destinations, hosting productions well beyond the handful most visitors already know.
Because the route covers fewer stops than the full-day version, your guide can go deeper on the specific history behind each one — what was actually filmed where, what's changed about the location since, and which nearby spots have their own, lesser-known production history — rather than racing between locations on a packed schedule.
