Atlantic bottlenose dolphins are year-round residents of these coastal waters, and they tend to favor specific spots — especially shipping channels and tidal creeks — where shrimp and small baitfish concentrate. Along parts of the Georgia and South Carolina coast, local bottlenose dolphins also practice a striking, cooperative hunting behavior called strand feeding, where a group works together to herd fish onto exposed mudflats before lunging out of the water to grab them. It's one of only a handful of places on Earth where this specific behavior has been documented, which is part of why dolphin-watching here draws genuine scientific interest, not just tourist traffic — Savannah State University runs a dedicated Dolphin Sciences Laboratory studying the local population's ecology and behavior.
The backdrop for all of this is Georgia's low country, one of the most extensive salt marsh estuary systems anywhere in the country. The state's coastline holds roughly 378,000 acres of salt marsh — more than a quarter of what remains along the entire U.S. East Coast — formed where fresh river water, salty ocean tides, and one of the highest tidal ranges on the Eastern Seaboard mix together into shallow, biologically rich estuary habitat.
That same habitat makes this stretch of coast genuinely important for birds, not just dolphins. Resident and migratory species feed and nest throughout the mudflats, tidal pools, and marsh grass here, including imperiled species such as the eastern black rail. Because every sighting depends on the wild, unscripted rhythms of tide and season, your captain tailors the route and pace to whichever focus you choose — sunset light, dolphins, or birds — rather than running a fixed itinerary regardless of conditions.
