Savannah's downtown isn't organized as a plain grid, and that's exactly why a theme-driven driving tour works so well here. When James Oglethorpe founded the city in 1733, he and surveyor William Bull laid Savannah out as a series of self-contained wards, each built around a public square with civic lots on the east and west sides and residential lots to the north and south. Oglethorpe personally laid out only the first six squares before returning to England, but Savannah's leaders kept extending the pattern for well over a century, eventually reaching 24 squares by 1851 — 22 of which still survive, giving nearly every block of the Historic District its own small civic center and its own slice of a specific story, whether that's colonial-era politics, Irish immigration, or the city's Jewish or African American communities.
That density of distinct, square-by-square history is what makes a single fixed walking route a poor fit for a lot of visitors — the stories you actually want (military history, architecture, local ghost lore, or any of the other real themes this tour can build around) aren't evenly spread across downtown, and covering them properly on foot in Savannah's humid climate can be genuinely demanding. Touring by air-conditioned vehicle instead means the day can move efficiently between whichever squares and sites match your chosen theme, without losing time or comfort covering unrelated ground in between.
The option to extend the day out to Tybee Island or Bonaventure Cemetery follows the same logic. Tybee's lighthouse dates back to a structure first built in 1736 at Oglethorpe's own direction, making it one of the oldest surviving structures in Georgia, while Bonaventure — originally a colonial-era plantation before becoming a cemetery in 1846 — holds what's considered the finest collection of Victorian funerary sculpture in the American South. Neither site is realistically reachable on a downtown walking tour, which is exactly the gap a flexible, themed driving format is built to close.
