Starting this walk in Forsyth Park puts you at Savannah's grandest public space before the half-day even really begins. The land was first set aside for recreation in the 1840s by local merchant William Hodgson, and the park's famous centerpiece — the cast-iron fountain visitors photograph more than almost anything else in the city — was installed in 1858, modeled after the fountains at the Place de la Concorde in Paris. It's a deliberately ornamental, almost theatrical landmark to open a walking tour at, and it sets the tone for a route built around architecture, gardens, and the stories behind Savannah's grand old houses.
From there the walk moves into Colonial Park Cemetery, the city's principal burial ground from 1750 until it closed to new interments in 1853. More than 9,000 burials are recorded on the grounds, including Declaration of Independence signer Button Gwinnett and several other figures from Georgia's Revolutionary-era government, alongside a memorial marking the roughly 700 victims of a 19th-century yellow fever epidemic buried in a mass grave on the cemetery's eastern side — a genuinely moving stop beneath the same moss-draped oaks that make the rest of the walk so photogenic.
The Davenport House, further along the route, tells a different kind of Savannah story: how close the city came to losing much of what this walk now covers. In 1955, the Federal-style Davenport House (built around 1820) was slated for demolition to make way for a parking lot — one of several historic buildings being torn down in a city that was, at the time, in genuine architectural decline. A group of seven Savannah women stopped the sale, bought the house themselves, and founded the Historic Savannah Foundation in response, which went on to save hundreds of buildings across the city. The Davenport House opened to the public as a museum in 1963 and is still owned and operated by that same foundation today, making it less a side stop and more the real origin point of the preservation movement that saved the Historic District this tour walks through.
