Before it was a gallery, the alley now called Beco do Batman was an unlit side street. In the early 1970s it was known as Imporbox after a metalworking shop for acrylic and aluminium boxes, and around 1975 it picked up the nickname Larguinho. In the 1980s, students from the nearby University of São Paulo moved into rented houses in Vila Madalena, and artists followed.
The first paintings in the alley are credited to artist Alex Vallauri and set designer Zé Carratu. The 'Batman' name came from an anonymous stencilled Batman; local folklore says it began as a prank on a resident who disturbed the bats in nearby trees by arriving home late. Treat that as folklore rather than documented fact.
Vila Madalena itself was largely hills above Pinheiros until the late 1960s, and from the early 1970s became a bohemian base for students, musicians and filmmakers. Restaurants and design shops arrived in the 1990s. Walls are repainted often, so expect murals that differ from older photographs.
