Vila Madalena was mostly hills above Pinheiros until the late 1960s. From the early 1970s it became a bohemian stronghold when low-income students from the University of São Paulo and PUC moved in, and in the 1970s and 80s it was adopted by intellectuals, musicians and filmmakers. In the 1990s restaurants and design shops arrived beside the older left-wing botecos.
Rua Aspicuelta is one of the main bar streets, and locals gather there early as the weekend begins. Opening hours, music nights and crowds change by day, so your guide shapes the evening around what is on.
