MASP was founded in 1947 by media magnate Assis Chateaubriand and Italian art dealer and critic Pietro Maria Bardi, who directed it. Bardi's wife, architect Lina Bo Bardi, designed the Avenida Paulista building completed in 1968, and had earlier shaped the museum's exhibition design.
The building's gesture is its structure: a glass-and-concrete box slung beneath two huge red prestressed-concrete portal frames, clearing a span of 74 metres, which leaves the ground beneath open as public space. Inside, the permanent collection is shown on glass easels in an open-plan gallery, so you can walk around paintings and see their backs.
The collection holds more than 11,000 works, and its European holdings include pieces by Monet, Renoir, Manet, Degas and Van Gogh. Which works are on display can change with rehangs and special exhibitions.
