Avenida Paulista was inaugurated on 8 December 1891 as a residential boulevard on the city's highest ridge, lined with the eclectic mansions of coffee-fortune families. It was reportedly the first paved street in the city, in 1909, and later the mansions gave way to office blocks, making it today's financial and cultural spine. A few of the old mansions still stand.
Ibirapuera Park covers about 158 hectares and opened on 21 August 1954. Roberto Burle Marx's landscape ideas inspired the plan, and the Niemeyer-led cluster of buildings was registered as a national landmark in 2016. For many Paulistanos it is the city's main weekend green space.
Downtown ties the three together. The streets around Praça da Sé trace back to the Jesuit settlement of 1554, so a single day here runs from colonial origins through the coffee boom to modernist design, in an order your guide adjusts to your pace.
