With a full day, the story can begin where São Paulo does: the Pátio do Colégio, where on 25 January 1554 Jesuits including Manuel da Nóbrega and José de Anchieta celebrated the first Mass of their mission school. The original was a modest mud-and-wattle building; the present church and school are a reconstruction built between 1954 and 1979, inspired by the original.
Ibirapuera Park gives a very different tone. It was inaugurated on 21 August 1954, also for the city's 400th anniversary, covers about 158 hectares, and its modernist buildings, designed by Oscar Niemeyer and collaborators, were registered as a national landmark in 2016. Landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx's ideas inspired the park's layout.
Beco do Batman in Vila Madalena rounds out the day. Its name is usually traced to a stencilled Batman that appeared in the 1980s, with local folklore tying it to a joke about a resident who came home late; the artist's identity is unknown. Murals there change constantly, so what you see will differ from earlier visitors' photos.
