Valparaíso Bay was once one of the most strategically important harbors on the entire Pacific coast of South America. From the 1700s through the early 1900s, virtually every ship rounding the treacherous Cape Horn on its way between the Atlantic and Pacific stopped here to take on provisions, bank, or insure its cargo, making 19th-century Valparaíso the leading commercial port on this side of the continent. That role ended abruptly in 1914, when the opening of the Panama Canal gave ships a far shorter, safer route and shipping traffic through the bay collapsed almost overnight. The 30-minute boat ride included on this tour crosses the same bay that once anchored fleets from around the world, with views of the hillside city, the naval base, and the working port that still operates there today.
Along the way, the stop for lapis lazuli jewelry touches on a genuinely unusual Chilean export: the Chilean Andes are one of only two major sources of lapis lazuli on earth, alongside Afghanistan's Badakhshan province, with Chile's deposits mined further north in the Coquimbo region. The Casablanca Valley wine stops on this route sit in Chile's oldest cool-climate wine region, first planted commercially in 1982 after decades of being considered too cold and foggy for serious viticulture — a genuinely different grape-growing environment from the warmer valleys most Chilean wine is associated with, which is part of what makes an unusual bottling like a blue-tinted wine possible here.
In Viña del Mar, the tour passes the city's Floral Clock (Reloj de Flores), a flower-covered clock near Caleta Abarca beach that opened in 1962 with a mechanism built by the Favag clockmakers of Neuchâtel, Switzerland. The nearby moai is often described as a replica, but it's actually the real thing: the statue outside the Fonck Museum is an authentic moai gifted to Chile by the people of Rapa Nui (Easter Island), and it's the only original moai found anywhere on the South American mainland rather than on the island itself.
What sets this version of the Valparaíso day apart from a standard coastal itinerary is less about the stops themselves and more about the pace: with no other travelers joining, your guide can linger longer at a favorite viewpoint, reorder the stops, or stretch out lunch overlooking the bay without anyone else's schedule to accommodate.
