Valle Nevado, the furthest and highest of this tour's three Andes stops, opened in 1988 as a joint French-Chilean project modeled loosely on the French resort of Les Arcs. Sitting at a base elevation of around 3,000 meters and rising to roughly 3,670 meters at its summit, it's considered South America's largest ski area, with close to 900 hectares of its own terrain — and once its interconnected neighboring resorts are counted, nearly 7,000 acres of skiable ground in total, more than any other resort complex on the continent.
Farellones, the mountain village this tour passes through on the way up, has a more modest, grassroots origin. Skiers began exploring the area informally in the 1930s, and in 1937 a landowner named Von Kiesling subdivided his property into lots, effectively founding the village as a base for the slopes above. Sitting at about 2,340 meters, it remains the gateway to this whole cluster of ski areas, with a cable car connecting it directly to El Colorado five kilometers up the hill.
El Colorado itself — called the Colorado Ski Resort on this tour — traces back to the same 1930s wave of interest, with the first snow shelter built in Farellones in 1935 and an early surface lift running by 1936, making it one of the oldest ski operations in Chile. Today its slopes span a base of 2,430 meters up to a 3,333-meter summit, a vertical drop of more than 900 meters, set against the same dramatic high-Andes skyline visible from Valle Nevado and Farellones.
