Viña Undurraga was founded in 1885 by Francisco Undurraga Vicuña, a Basque immigrant who spent several years planning the project before planting a single vine. He named the estate "Fundo Santa Ana" after his wife, Ana Fernández de Íñiguez, and set about building a winery that looked outward from the start: he imported Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir cuttings from France and Riesling and Gewürztraminer from Germany, reportedly shipping the vine stock in lead-lined capsules to keep it from wilting on the long sea voyage to Chile.
That outward-looking streak paid off quickly. In 1903, Undurraga became the first Chilean winery to export its wines to the United States, a milestone that helped put Chilean wine on the international map decades before most of its neighbors followed. Today the estate (owned by the Picciotto and Yuraszeck families since 2006) farms roughly 1,700 hectares of vines spread across Maipo, Colchagua, Cachapoal, Leyda and Maule, though the historic Talagante property this tour visits remains the heart of the brand.
The Mapuche heritage stop on this tour centers on what the estate calls its Aliwen corner, a garden area built to recreate the native vegetation of southern Chile and honor the Indigenous Mapuche culture with hand-carved wooden chemamüll figures, totems, and a small display of Mapuche archaeology and handicrafts. It's not a claim that the Maipo Valley itself was historically Mapuche territory — rather, it's a deliberate tribute the winery built into its own grounds, and it gives the walk through Undurraga's gardens a cultural dimension most Maipo Valley tastings don't offer.
