Santa Rita's best-known story predates the winery itself. After the Battle of Rancagua in 1814, Spanish royalist forces routed the Chilean independence fighters led by Bernardo O'Higgins. According to the estate's own well-documented telling, Paula Jaraquemada, who owned the hacienda at the time, hid O'Higgins and roughly 120 of his soldiers in the property's cellars, letting them slip away safely to regroup in Argentina before returning in 1817 to help secure Chile's independence.
The winery itself was founded around 1880, when Domingo Fernández Concha brought French vine stock to the already-storied property and began producing wine in earnest. More than a century later, in 1982, Santa Rita turned the soldiers' story into its flagship label, launching the "120" wines specifically to commemorate the event — and the Bodega de las 120 Patriotas, one of the two historic cellar buildings this tour visits, still carries that name today.
Both Bodega 1 and the Bodega de las 120 Patriotas sit within the Alto Jahuel area of the Maipo Valley, and walking through them puts you literally inside the buildings tied to this chapter of Chilean history before the tasting moves on to Santa Rita's modern lineup — Cabernet Sauvignon, the Reserva and Sauvignon Blanc among them.
