Portillo is one of South America's oldest and most storied ski resorts, with its hotel opening in 1949 under Chilean state management — making it the continent's first purpose-built ski resort. Perched above 30 hairpin switchbacks on the Los Caracoles highway, just a few kilometers from the Argentine border, its bright yellow hotel building has become instantly recognizable from far down the valley. Portillo's international reputation was cemented in 1966, when it became the first South American resort to host the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships.
The hotel sits directly on the shore of Laguna del Inca, the striking turquoise lake this tour is named for. Local legend tells of an Inca ruler, Illi Yunqui, whose beloved, Princess Kora-llé, fell to her death from a cliff during a royal hunting expedition; grief-stricken, he is said to have laid her body to rest in the lake rather than in the earth, and locals say the water took on its vivid color in tribute to her eyes, with his spirit still said to linger over the lagoon. It's told more as local folklore than documented history, but it's part of what makes Laguna del Inca one of the most photographed lakes in the Chilean Andes.
The drive up also follows the Aconcagua Valley, named for the mountain that looms over the Argentine side of the border — at roughly 6,960 meters, Aconcagua is the highest peak in the Americas and in both the Western and Southern Hemispheres. The petroglyphs this tour visits along the way add a much older layer of history to the same valley, carved by Indigenous peoples who moved through this Andes corridor long before the Incas or the Spanish arrived.
