Casablanca Valley is a young wine region by Chilean standards, and its origin story is specific: in 1982, winemaker Pablo Morandé (then working for Concha y Toro) planted experimental Chardonnay, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc at a site called Tapihue, defying the conventional wisdom that this ocean-cooled valley between Santiago and the coast was too cold for serious wine. That first harvest produced a crisp, high-acid Chardonnay unlike anything Chile's warmer central valleys had made, and it's widely credited with kicking off Chile's broader cool-climate wine movement.
Casas del Bosque arrived a decade later as one of the next wave of pioneers in that same valley, founded in 1993 in a spot called Las Dichas by Juan Cúneo Solari. The estate takes its name, "houses of the forest," from the old pine and olive trees and small whitewashed adobe houses that stood on the land when the Cúneo family began planting.
The family's vineyards sit in Santa Rosa, on the western edge of Casablanca, generally considered one of the coolest pockets in a region already defined by cool, ocean-influenced air. That exposure is a big part of why Casas del Bosque's wines lean toward fresh, vibrant styles — crisp Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling, plus cooler-climate reds like Pinot Noir and Syrah — rather than the riper, fuller-bodied reds that Maipo Valley, just inland and warmer, is better known for.
