Cachagua Island is a small, roughly 5-hectare outcrop just off the coast near Zapallar, protected as the Monumento Natural Isla de Cachagua, Chile's national monument designation for a site of significant natural value. The island sits in the Humboldt Current, one of the most nutrient-rich marine systems in the world, and it's this cold, productive water that supports the real reason people come: a resident colony of Humboldt penguins, a species classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN, with a declining wild population estimated at roughly 23,800 mature individuals across its full range. Sea lions, cormorants and pelicans share the rocks alongside the penguins, giving the island its popular nickname, 'Penguin Island.'
Because the island itself is closed to visitors to protect the colony, you'll view the penguins from the shore or from an authorized boat offshore rather than landing — this is a genuine conservation measure, not a limitation of the tour, and it's the same restriction every operator in the area has to work within. It's still a real, close look at wild Humboldt penguins in their actual nesting habitat, not a zoo enclosure or a staged encounter.
The day then shifts to Ritoque, a stretch of coastline near Quintero in the Valparaíso Region known for its sand dunes, pine groves and coastal wetlands. Horseback rides here typically wind through this mixed landscape — forest, dune and wetland — before reaching Ritoque Beach itself, with guided horses suited to riders of different experience levels. Pairing a wildlife stop with an active outdoor ride and a barbecue lunch makes for a genuinely varied day, built around three real, distinct settings along Chile's central coast rather than one single attraction stretched thin.
