Santa Marta Bay is a natural harbor on Colombia's Caribbean coast, and the city that wraps around it was founded by the Spanish conquistador Rodrigo de Bastidas on 29 July 1525. It is generally described as Colombia's oldest surviving Spanish-founded city. From the water you see it the way early mariners did: a ring of dry hills meeting the sea, with the city's skyline stepping up behind the harbor.
The backdrop is what makes the sunset memorable. The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta rises only about 42 km from the coast and is often called the highest coastal mountain range in the world, with its highest peaks reported at roughly 5,700 m. On clear evenings the range can still catch light after the bay has gone dim, though haze and cloud often hide the high peaks.
A reserved boat for up to 12 guests means you set the mood, and the tour note about bringing your own cooler is practical: this is a relaxed cruise rather than a catered dinner, so plan your drinks and snacks around the 2.5-hour window.
