The Plaza is where Santa Fe began. The Palace of the Governors on its north side was begun around 1610 under Pedro de Peralta, the first royal governor of New Mexico, and is generally recognized as the oldest continuously occupied public building in the United States. Spanish settlers were forced out during the Pueblo Revolt of 1680, and Pueblo people held the building for twelve years, reusing adobe from the dismantled parish church, before Diego de Vargas returned in 1693.
A few blocks south, San Miguel Chapel was built sometime between 1610 and 1628, probably by Tlaxcalan laborers working under Franciscan direction. It was damaged by fire in 1680 and rebuilt in 1710, and it is widely billed as the oldest church in the continental United States, a title worth hearing explained rather than simply repeated.
Much of what looks ancient downtown is newer than it seems. The flat roofs, rounded corners and exposed beams of Santa Fe Style were codified in the early twentieth century, so your guide can separate the genuine colonial walls from the later revival.
