The New Mexico Museum of Art opened on November 24, 1917. Architects Isaac Hamilton Rapp and William Morris Rapp modeled it on the New Mexico Building they had designed for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition in San Diego, itself inspired by the state's Spanish mission churches. It is built of reinforced concrete and stucco that imitates adobe, and it helped launch what became known as Santa Fe Style.
The museum was created to replace the art gallery in the Palace of the Governors, directly across the street, whose own history reaches back to about 1610. Seeing the two buildings together shows the difference between genuine colonial construction and the revival style that followed.
The Cathedral Basilica, built between 1869 and 1886 under Archbishop Lamy on the site of an earlier adobe church, completes the picture of a city that kept reinventing its architecture.
