The New Mexico History Museum, which sits beside the Palace of the Governors, tells the region's story from Pueblo and Spanish colonial times through the Santa Fe Trail and statehood. The Palace itself, begun around 1610, anchors that narrative as the oldest continuously occupied public building in the United States.
The Loretto Chapel was consecrated in 1878 for the Sisters of Loretto's girls' school and is modeled on Paris's Sainte-Chapelle. Its spiral staircase has 33 steps and two full turns with no central support, and was built largely with wooden pegs rather than nails. Analyses have identified a spruce not native to New Mexico, and the carpenter's identity remains a matter of legend.
Canyon Road adds the artistic layer. It evolved from a Camino Real farm lane into a gallery district in the early twentieth century, when painters and writers settled in Santa Fe's adobe neighborhoods.
